So, how do you know that you have gynecomastia in the early stages?
What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a benign or non-cancerous condition where there is an enlargement of male breasts to varying degrees. This swelling can be of varying degrees and a microscopic examination reveals that it may be comprised of glands and fat to varying extent.
Early Signs of Gynecomastia
The early signs of gynecomastia are most noticeable during puberty when there is hormonal imbalance in the body. Typically, it may comprise of the following –
Puffy Nipples – The nipples become pointed and protruded and take on a “puffy” appearance which can be quite noticeable.
Firm or Rubbery Tissue – When one palpates behind the nipples, one would be able to find firm or rubbery breast tissue.
Frank Breast Enlargement – This usually takes some time to develop when there might be symmetric or asymmetric enlargement of both breasts. Sometimes only one breast is affected.
Breast Tenderness or Pain – Patients may feel breast pain which may range from moderate to severe.
Nipple Sensitivity – The nipples become unusually sensitive to touch or pressure and this might be worsened when the nipples rub against clothing.
Nipple Discharge – Although extremely rare, this may cause concern in patients with the nipple discharge being either clear or milky.
Gynecomastia Treatment
Although in the initial stages a conservative approach is recommended as most of the small breast swellings eventually disappear, this might not be true in all cases.
The most effective long term treatment is gynecomastia surgery which relieves the patient of the breast tissues permanently. This is done mostly in adults and in some cases in adolescents where there is gross enlargement of breast tissues to the extent that there is peer ridicule and psychological problems in the patient.
