Introduction
Gynecomastia is a benign or harmless condition in which the chest of male patients resembles that of females. It can have various causes although the most common cause is a hormonal imbalance that occurs during adolescence. Gynecomastia is quite common and as many as 6-7 males out of 10 can experience this condition at sometime in their life. The main indication of surgery is regaining the self-esteem of affected individuals and Prof. (Dr.) Souvik Adhikari, an accomplished Gynecomastia Surgeon in Kolkata has performed successful gynecomastia surgeries in more than 1000 patients over a period of 12 years.
Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia surgery or male breast surgery or gyno surgery or male boobs surgery is a surgical procedure in which the enlarged breasts in a male patient are addressed by surgery. The underlying components of the male breasts such as glands, fat and sometimes, redundant skin are removed to provide an aesthetic appearance to the chest.
In the earliest cases, only a small glandular swelling is noted, while in higher grades, large breasts, akin to female breasts are seen. Accordingly, the surgical process varies and so are the incisions made and the resultant scarring. However, it is always important to remember that scars fade with time but redundant skin may worsen.
Steps in Getting a Gynecomastia Surgery in Kolkata
Prof. (Dr.) Adhikari will examine you first in person and then classify your gynecomastia according to the standard grading systems. He will then suggest the appropriate pre-operative investigations and the anesthesia method that would be followed during the surgery process. He would also outline the incision sites and whether any skin removal would be necessary.
For out of the city patients, an examination in person might not be always possible, therefore, the initial evaluation would be accomplished by photographs sent by the patient himself and the tentative surgical plan would be highlighted. However, the final decision would always be taken at the time of surgery when the patient is examined in person.
Male Breast Reduction Procedure
Surgery for male breast removal is done under local anesthesia by Prof. Adhikari in most cases, who is an expert in this technique. In some cases of very higher grades, general anesthesia would be needed.
In most cases, after tumescent infiltration of fluid, liposuction is done first. This is followed up with an incision around the areola and removal of the underlying glands. In some patients, redundant skin is removed so as to provide a better shape to the chest.
Recovery after Male Breast Surgery
In all cases of surgery performed under local anesthesia, patients are immediately discharged and go back home. In cases done under general anesthesia, patients have to spend the night in the facility.
Patients are advised to perform normal activities of daily living from the next day itself. They can consider light work after 2-3 days of surgery and can resume travel within 5-6 days of surgery.
Brisk walking and jogging can be done after 2 weeks of surgery and rigorous gym training can be initiated 3 weeks after the surgery.
It is important that patients do not smoke or drink or take any substance like steroids for about 3 weeks after surgery.
