Introduction
Many patients are worried about male breast surgery fearing complications. After all, this is a surgery which is done under general anesthesia by most surgeons. This means that most of the patients would remain unconscious during surgery. This worries them the most apart from the possibility of complications.
Surgery under Local Anesthesia
Patients, who are worried about being posted for a major surgery under general anesthesia can safely undergo the surgery under local anesthesia.
In my practice, most patients are operated under local anesthesia. This is a safe and time tested method and I have been doing it for years with outstanding results. Patients are not sedated in any form and can safely go back home after surgery, no hospital stay is required. Also, patients are extremely comfortable during the whole process and feel the least amount of pain.

The Entire Process is Extremely Safe
The patient is walked into the operating room, pictures are taken and markings are done. The whole of the chest is cleaned and the surgery is begun.
Surgery starts by infiltration of an anesthetic solution into the chest. This is done using fine needles such that the pain encountered during the injections is minimal. Patients do not need to be apprehensive about the pain. Once the injection is complete, the surgeon will wait for 15-20 min for the anesthesia to take effect. After this, the liposuction is done followed by gland and skin excision wherever required. The patient is then discharged after surgery.
Possibility of complications later on
Gynecomastia surgery is considered mostly as a safe surgery with a low incidence of post-operative complications. Even if complications occur, these are mostly minor and can be managed conservatively in most cases without any further surgery.
Complications will be discussed in other posts.
Conclusion
Gynecomastia or male breast surgery is a very safe form of surgery and can be done under local anesthesia in most cases in my practice. Overall, the incidence of complications is very low. Patients will get back their confidence immediately after surgery.
