Many patients fear going through gynecomastia surgery because they fear extreme pain after surgery which might cripple them for prolonged periods of time. However, is this true? How severe can be the pain from gynecomastia surgery? Let us delve deeper into this.

It is important to note that gynecomastia surgery is usually done under local anesthesia under my practice. This incorporates infusion with lignocaine and adrenaline to the whole of the operative area. This technique actually has 2 functions: it numbs the operative area making the surgery pain-free and facilitates analgesia after surgery.

Most patients who have had gynecomastia surgery remain pain-free for a couple of hours after surgery. The duration varies with many patients remaining pain-free for even 12-24 hours after surgery while in others the duration may only last for a few hours.
It is important to note that very few patients have “severe” pain on the day of surgery with most patients complaining of “mild” or “moderate” degree of pain on the night of surgery.

Week After Gynecomastia Surgery

Most patients remain pain-free a week after gynecomastia surgery. Some patients may complain of a stinging pain in the nipple area during this period. This should decrease with analgesics and light massaging of the nipple-areolar area. Very rarely this pain may be extremely severe.

Long Term Pain

A few patients may complain of long standing pain which may occur till 3-6 months after surgery. The characteristic of pain is typically dull aching although a sharp pain may be observed in the nipple area. Massaging with a moisturizer can help in decreasing the pain and in a very few patients analgesics might be required. In most patients pain should completely subside by 8-12 months.

Conclusion

The grade of pain in most patients following gynecomastia surgery is typically low in most patients and moderate in a few patient. Very rarely, the pain is labeled as extremely severe. Therefore, patients can safely go in for gynecomastia surgery in Kolkata with the knowledge that they would recover within a very short period of time and would be pain-free in a few days after surgery barring exceptions.
